Hi All
Here are some more shots of our tour to the summit of the dormant Volcano Mt Haleakala. It last erupted 250 years ago and there are predictions it is possible it will erupt again.Measured from the sea bed it is actually higher than Mt Everst. We were advised about altitude sickness and precautions to take. It was very very cold and windy.
Picture 1 shows June waiting for our tour to turn up at the hotel at 2.45 AM. Picture 2 shows June & I in the pre dawn darkness all rugged up and waiting for the sunrise - due at 6.48 AM
Pictures 3 & 4 show the early stage and the later stage just as the sun pops over the edge of the crater. Picture 5 shows part of the crater in post dawn daylight - it is a huge crater over 21 miles wide so I could not capture it in one photo. Inside the crater you can see a number of smaller craters.
It was still very cold after sunrise but when we descended back to sea level it was very warm weather - all the jumper & coats were discarded. The road to the summit is 38 miles from sea level and it rises 10,000 feet
on a very winding road - but June survived without getting travel sickness. She is becoming a much better traveller in this regard.
Till next time
June & Brian
Beautiful photos Dad, especially the one with the pink in the sky. Glad you didnt fall in xx
