Scenes from the road to Hana

Aloha
We saw many beautiful scenes on the road to Hana, ranging from mountain views, waterfalls and sea scapes. June is standing near the grave site of the famous aviator Charles Lindberg. The picture of Brian shows him standing on one of the famous black sand beaches in the south of Maui - this is caused by the lava and over the millions of years the lava rock is worn to fine sand - just as fine as the sand we are used to.
We are going on a whale watching cruise today (Tuesday) and going to a hawaiian themed Cirque de Soleil tonight.
Till next time

Wildlife seen on the road to Hana

Aloha from Brian & June
We saw some interesting and beautiful wildlife on the road to Hana.
The only ceature you may not recognise is the mongoose
which was introduced to combat the rats wich were introduced to Maui from the trading ships. The other interesting example is the beautiful young virgin preparing to bathe in one of the seven sacred pools - I was unable to determine the spirtual significance. We were also going to bahe but it was too cold - being mountain water.
I will post some natural wonders next time.

The Road to Hana

Aloha from Brian & June
Today we completed an epic road trip right around the Island of Maui. Its called the Road to hana which is at the southern tip of the Island. It is renowned as having over 600 hairpin turns and over 60 one lane bridges crossing deep ravines. In many places there is no room to pass an oncoming vehicle - which means someone has to back up. At many points the road clings to the mountain side with a cliff dropping straight to the sea.
The Beatles came to Maui and George Harrison built a house at Hana where he eventually died of cancer. But the Beatles wrote the song "Long and winding Road" after the Road to Hana. The pictures donot really show the bad road conditions. But apart from this there are some spectacular sights - see the next blog.

Lu'ao and Rotary Club of Lahina Maui

Aloha from June & Brian
Went to a Lu'ao the other night. Very spectacular and enjoyable. Held on the beach with good dancing, food and music. Met some really nice USA people who are very friendly and helpful. They become excited when they learn we are Australians, they all want to come to the land of Oz.
Attended the Rotary Club of Lahina and met more very nice people. This club had 43 Rotarians present of which about 18 were visitors. One from Canada, June & I and the rest were from all over USA including Alaska. The good news is that I won the raffle which was a voucher on a fancy beachside restaurant - it was very enjoyable and very picturesque. The last photo shows me posing on the verandah - right next to our table.
Aloha until next time.

Sunrise at Mt Haleakala Volcono 10,000 ft.

Hi All
Here are some more shots of our tour to the summit of the dormant Volcano Mt Haleakala. It last erupted 250 years ago and there are predictions it is possible it will erupt again.Measured from the sea bed it is actually higher than Mt Everst. We were advised about altitude sickness and precautions to take. It was very very cold and windy.
Picture 1 shows June waiting for our tour to turn up at the hotel at 2.45 AM. Picture 2 shows June & I in the pre dawn darkness all rugged up and waiting for the sunrise - due at 6.48 AM
Pictures 3 & 4 show the early stage and the later stage just as the sun pops over the edge of the crater. Picture 5 shows part of the crater in post dawn daylight - it is a huge crater over 21 miles wide so I could not capture it in one photo. Inside the crater you can see a number of smaller craters.
It was still very cold after sunrise but when we descended back to sea level it was very warm weather - all the jumper & coats were discarded. The road to the summit is 38 miles from sea level and it rises 10,000 feet on a very winding road - but June survived without getting travel sickness. She is becoming a much better traveller in this regard.
Till next time

Maui is a great place to holiday

Hello All
We have had very busy time doing lots of really enjoyable things.
Just a few shots of our helicopter experience - ?June looks like she is enjoying the flight doesn't she?
The shot showing the ocean and shoreis the place that Jurrasic Park was made.
The sunrise over the volcano was very spectacular, I think I got some good shots. I will include more shots from the volcano in a later blog including one showing June & Brian freezing their **** off in the pre dawn darkness and as you can see - it was still freezing in the daylight as well.
Till next time
Aloha

Maui at first look.

Hi All

Arrived safe and sound but very tired in Maui. Jet Star is not my favorite airline. Delayed over 45 minutes sitting on plane because they could not reconcile the numbers of bodies on the plane with their records of who boarded. Absolutely no inflight service. Even the entertainment units are sub standard - poor sound reception.

This is a magnificent resort right on the andthe beach at Maui. We feel like we are millionaires living in luxury. We have booked for and paid for our tours, Luao, shows, car hire, cruises and the helicopter tour ( yeah !!!) I'll show you the photos.

First trip tomorrow, we leave at 2.45 AM to travel to the rim of a very large dormant volcano to view the famous sunrise ( weather permitting )

Photos show the resort and June plus a very latg seal who decided to sunbake on Maui Beach. No human is allowed near him he has been cordoned off like a police crime scene.

Till next time.
